Letter from Abraham Jhirad to Dr. Weiss about OU Budgetary Statement for India (1962)

Dear Dr. Weiss, Enclosed with this, one copy each of the following: (1) Budgetary Statement (2) Receipt and payment account for the year ended 1961 (3) Report from Mr. Grossman about the classes (4) The official receipt for Rs. 500.00. The year 1961 shows a surplus of Rs. 629/- but if the amounts earmarked for the salary of the Hazzan of the F.R.I. Congregation, Rs. 525/-; Rs. 105/- for the students of the Talmud Torah, and Rs. 53/- collected for Hebra Kaddisha Fund of the Congregation, it will be seen that there is actually a deficit of Rs. 1212/-.The sum of Rs. 500/- was received in December 1961 for the classes for the period of July to December 1961, as also our contribution to the camp project for the summer of 1962.The death of the Hon. Treasurer has created a temporary set-back, and a minimum balance of Rs. 500/- is our only reserve.We feel confident that we should be able to collect another Rs. 500/- once a meeting with Mr. Grossman is arranged, and it may be possible to do so as soon as the Majlis permits.The regular classes are progressing steadily. Students of various groups are making progress in Hebrew, Jewish History, and Customs. There is also a good response to singing songs and having discussions about religious topics.This is to replace Oneg Shabbath activities, as the Grossmans stay very far from the Synagogues. Similar meetings are serving as Shabbath activities for other Congregations after the Mincha service.We are grateful to Rabbi Lamm for the most generous proposal for the setting up of a knitting mill here. We shall work hard at it and, by the grace of the Almighty, we shall be able to start something very soon.Rabbi Lamm gave me to understand that my request about books, etc. has been forwarded to you.Mr. Grossman was not very communicative about the students whose travel expenses are to be borne by the JCA. He stipulated many conditions for having undertaken to bear the expenses. We would very much like to use some of the Agency teachers…

Letter from Abraham Jhirad to Dr. Weiss about OU Expenses for Indian Jewry (1962)

Dear Dr. Weiss, I thank you for yours of June 25, 1962, and I am glad the matter about my assumption of duties as Executive Director stands corrected. The budget for the camp led by the Grossmans was to be fully covered. However, my remarks as to the contribution by the Union were particularly directed with this idea in view that the Union should always share in such expenses. For example, when the Agency has a target figure of Rs. 6000/- and they expect to collect about Rs. 2000/- from the participants, the total number of participants that can avail of the opportunity cannot be more than 200. A contribution by the participants @ Rs. 30/- barely covers Rs. 300/-, and if the Union asks the Agency to accept 10 more persons, it will not help.The other expenses also will have to be shared accordingly. The Union will have to accommodate the 10 extra persons. It means the Union will have to offer an additional sum of Rs. 300/- to make the above possible. However, this season has passed.Before the next, we propose to invite applications from youth who desire to participate but cannot avail of the facility for lack of funds. We will work it out with the Agency, the final figure, and then advise you accordingly.With regards to the training of students in Israel for the Teachers' course, I shall enquire from Mr. Grossman, and on receipt of his reply shall communicate with you.Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of IndiaC/o Magen Hasidim Synagogue, 8 Moreland Road, BOMBAY-11, IndiaMr. Kelman never made any suggestions for the improvement of the magazine, nor has he so far sent any articles for publication. Letter from Abraham Jhirad about the English Rabbinate Visit to India and Chazan Expenses (1963)

Dear Rabbi Lamm, I thank you for your letter of 24th December, which I found awaiting me on my return from Cochin. I discussed your letter with Mr. Kellman yesterday. He has already written to you in the matter. I personally do not expect that the English Rabbinate could help us much. It would definitely be an important matter if Rabbi Silas came on behalf of the English Rabbinate. I am sure he would be able to achieve much. I have not written to Rabbi Silas as yet. I am thinking about it.Though you feel that financial matters may be best left for last in this case, the point is what can I offer him. If the Fort Synagogue had the money, I would not hesitate. The present Hazan is drawing Rs 320/- and there has been a deficit in the last two years. Notwithstanding that, I have suggested Rs 800/- and I do not see how to raise the figure. Rs 800/- at the commencement may possibly be Rs 1000/- after some time, but this will not help as it seems he needs Rs 1800/- to maintain his position.I shall be glad to hear of Haham Gaon's feeling in the matter, and your meeting with the Overseas Commission of the U.O.J.C.A.
