A Definition of Progress in Judaism (1949)

What is the place and significance of progress in Traditional Judaism? This problem assumes additional importance in our own generation, when the rush of events, the increased momentum of life and the rapid growth of new and more complex sciences and philosophies leave the Traditional Jew in a maze of perplexity, striving to reconcile his faith with the newer systems of thought and lacking clearly defined criteria for the successful adaptation of Traditional Judaism to the contemporary intellectual environment. The very nature of the problem posed is difficult to treat. We cannot deny the existence of a progressive motion in Judaism without denying history, logic and science. At the same time, we cannot postulate unlimited change of any part of Judaism; to do so would be to reduce “Judaism" to a meaningless catch-word, and to strip Torah and Halacha of their very essence."Progress" in Judaism cannot be investigated as an isolated phenomenon. 'The examination of this problem must he based upon an understanding of the very form in which the dynamics of Halacha Judaism are manifested, both within Halacha itself and in the relation of Halacha to other systems, ideas, and concepts. This relationship is the substance of Jewish Philosophy. The preliminary phenomenon, the form of the dynamics of Judaism, is “conflict." To study these phenomena, their interrelationship and their application to the approach of the Traditionalist to modern life is the purpose of this essay.One of the most important aspects of Judaism[1], and one which can be said to set it apart from most other religions, is its constant engagement in conflicts of various sorts. Judaism is not a system at rest; it is a system in motion. The thinking, observing Jew cannot be intellectually or religiously static, because his very religion is based upon the resolution of a conflict, invites conflicts with other systems of thought, and predicates the path to ultimate Halachic perfection upon conflict. Doing Your Own Thing? A Jewish View (1969)

The fashionable idiomatic exhortation, "do your own thing,” is one of the most formidable slogans of our day. It defines the New Left in politics, the New Morality in conduct, and the New Generation in everything from art to drugs and theatre to hygiene. This awkward expression is new, one of the many products of the contemporary semantic experi- mentation and inventiveness. But as so often happens with neologisms, new words or terms represent ideas that are really quite old and well known.What it means is that every man must seek to satisfy his own self and not some other. The greatest virtue is to express yourself rather than to submit to the w׳ill of another. Values should be autonomous, self-generated, self-satisfying; not heteronomous, obedient to some other person or group that lays down values for you. This orientation therefore rejects any way of life in which the individual is not the center of all his concerns. Hence, all the old standards and criteria, whether in conduct or morality or art or politics, are now׳ brought into question and usually rejected in favor of "doing your ow׳n thing.” Naturally, religion with its insistence upon God’s authority as Creator, is considered passe; unless, of course, "doing the re- ligion thing” satisfies one’s personal w׳him or inclination, in which case religion turns into a form of harmless idiosyncratic psychopathology.As Jews, can we see anything positive in this new attitude? The an- swer, I believe, is: Yes. There is in it an emphasis that we must relearn for our times. Since the days of Karl Marx, who complained about the "reification” or reduction of man into a "thing,” into an object for exploita- tion rather than a subject possessed of individual dignity and integrity, modern thinkers have been aware of the dangers to the individuality and personality of men. האדם בהשקפת היהדות (1983)

פעם הראשונה בספרות ישראל מופיע דיון פילוסופי במקומו של האדם בתוך הבריאה בכתביו של רב סעדיה גאון. בדורות אשר לפני הרס״ג רמזו לעניין זה רק בנוסח סתמי ועמום ובדרך אגב. הגאון גיבש לראשונה קביעה ברורה כאשר ניגש לנתח את משמעותה של עליונות האדם כתכלית המכוונת של הבריאה. רס״ג מנסח קביעת שיטה על תפיסה הרואה את האדם עומד ברומו של עולם ובמרכזו – תפיסה אנתרופוצנטרית. בספרו "האמנות והדעות" הוא מתאר את האדם בין הברואים בתואר "המכוון בבריאה", והוא "קוטב העולם ומכונותו". תורת האדם הזאת אינה, לדעת רס״ג, רעיון אגב! היא חלק אינטגרלי בתשבצת השקפתו. עד שהגיע לניסוח זה הקדים אסמכתות בכתביו. בפירושו לספר היצירה, אשר חיברו כשנתיים לפני "האמונות והדעות" מצויים תמרורים לכיוון זה. ותורת האדם הזאת הרבתה להשפיע על הוגי דעות של עמנו בדורות אחריו. -מתי בחינות יש לתפיסה האנתרופוצנטרית: התבנית וההערכה. דבר יכול להימצא באמצע התבנית, במרכז. בלי יחם לערכו המרכזי והעליון. תרומתו החשובה של רס״ג לתפיסה האנתרופוצנטרית במסורת הפילוסופיה היא השיטה כי דבר אשר באמצע התבנית הוא אף ערכה המרכזי והעלאי. מי שחונך בתפיסה גיאוצנטרית, שכדור הארץ הוא מרכז העולם ומלואו, תופס באופן טבעי את השיטה כי האמצעי הוא הנקודה החשובה, הציר שהכל נסוב עליו, ואילו החלקים בין המרכז וההיקף אינם אלא משנה לו. כבר בהקדמתו ל״האמונות והדעות" מזדמן לרס״ג להרצות שיטה זו: "כי כל דבר חשוב שמור באמצע; וכבר התישר לנו שנחשוב זה לאדם השוכן בארץ אשר הוא באמצע הכל". בהמשך דבריו מסתייע רס״ג וכן "מוכיח" את התפיסה האנתרופוצנטרית המבוססת על עליונותו של האמצעי בשימוש טיעון אשר בגישה של ימינו היינו קוראים "הוכחה מדעית". בעיסוקו בתצפית הטבע מסיק רס״ג המסקנות בהקישו הקש בין טבע הבריאה בכללה וטיבו של האדם. הרי הגרגר והגלעין באמצע הפרי, בטיבורו, כי חשוב הוא מכל חלק אחר של הפרי — כפירות היבשים — גרגר הדגן בין העלים, כפירות העסיסיים — בית גלעין כי מן הגלעין יצמח אילן. החלמון מקנן בטיבורה של הביצה, במרכזה — כי בו מתרקם האפרוח. לבו של האדם, משכן נשמתו, פועם באמצע חזהו. כח הראות קבוע באמצע העין. וז״ל: "תמצא כי (בתבנית) המנהג והבניה, כל דבר חשוב ונכבד נקבע באמצע, והדברים סביביו אינם חשובים ונכבדים כמותו. נתחיל בקטנים: הגרגיר ממוצע בתוך כל העלים, כי עולה הוא על חשי…
