Invocation: J.N.F. Luncheon, Mizrachi Women (1960)

Almighty G‑d: do Thou send Thy blessings upon all those here gathered – them, their families, and all others everywhere associated with us in our sacred work. Give us the inspiration, encouragement, and vision to carry on our mission of rebuilding the Holy Land in the spirit of the Holy Torah. Bless with success, especially, our undertakings on behalf of the Jewish National Fund, whose purpose it is to reclaim the land promised to Abraham as the possession of Israel. For the J.N.F. and its tree-planting program symbolizes the confidence we, Thy children, have in the future of Thy land. Indeed, the tree is the symbol of our people. Our roots lie deep in sacred history: the Patriarchs and Matriarchs of Israel, the prophets and sages and rabbis who discoursed in it and about it. The trunk is our people as constituted at present – strong lines intertwined with weak, hard wood with soft, the enduring with the passing – but they are one, and their roots are holy. The branches of Israel are many. There is the proud branch of Torah, of scholarship and learning. There is the branch of worship – the synagogues where the worship of G‑d is carried on in our great tradition. There is the branch of charity and good deeds – of friendship for the lonely, medicine for the sick, assistance for the needy. And there is the branch of the reclamation of the Holy Land and the upbuilding of Zion and Jerusalem. We who are gathered at this Mizrachi Women J.N.F. luncheon are dedicated to the preservation and growth of that tree – its sacred roots, its vital trunk, and every one of its proud branches and twigs. O Creator of heaven and earth, who creates the fruit of the tree, may the tree of Israel indeed be an etz chayim, a tree of life. May it flourish, grow tall and luxuriant, and bear its precious fruit, speedily in our days, and let us say: Amen.

The Center Marks a Great Occassion

It is not often that a synagogue has the zekhut (privilege) to celebrate as joyous and significant an occasion as that which will be the happy lot of The Center family this month. Mr. William Feinberg, the Chairman of the Board of The Jewish Center shortly and a former President of our institution, will shortly be celebrating his 85th birthday and will mark this milestone in his life by chanting the Haftorah on Shabbat Shekalim (February 28). Mr. Feinberg is so very much a part of Center history, that it is inconceivable to write or even discuss the historic development of The Jewish Center without reference to his immeasurable contributions over the course of the years. In so many ways, he is indeed "Mr. Jewish Center." Not only has he directed the affairs of The Center in its most critical period and endeavored with all his might and main to keep our synagogue loyal to the vision of its founders, which is the vision of Orthodox Judaism, but in his own personality he so well represents what is distinctive and unique about The Jewish Center and its membership. His simhah is not only that of his immediate family, but of the entire congregational family as well. We offer him our warmest congratulations and join his family in expressing to the Almighty our devout gratitude for having spared him and kept him alive and well and vital to reach, with us, this great moment in his life. We pray for his continued health and joy for many many years to come. May the Lord grant him the years, the equanimity, and the good health to continue his creative leadership at The Center, and to reap the harvest that he so richly deserves. Dear Rabbi Lamm, First, I would like to thank you on my behalf and on Zevulun's behalf as well, for all the help and support you gave us during our stay in the United States. It is obvious that without your moral support and warm endorsement of our cause, we definitely would not have been as successful as we were. I know that you do not normally become involved in causes such as ours, and for that reason we are doubly indebted to you.
