Letter to R. Rosenfeld regarding Distribution of Leo Jung Jubilee Volume (1962)

Dear Lenny, I am looking forward to seeing the artwork by Schloss. I am returning enclosed to you the letter by Wengrov so that you can process it once we have made a decision on the artwork. I couldn't think of keeping it when, by all rights, the letter and responsibility for following it up belongs to you. Believing so, I don't dare to encroach on your prerogatives. Seriously, please, Lenny, be a good boy and follow through on these few details. Meanwhile, I have been meeting with the officers of the Center in an attempt to set up the program and other details.I suspect that, no matter what our own intentions and desires, the affair will not be exactly calculated to fit Satmar preconceptions about the nature of Rabbinic functions. It seems this will be more like a R.A.S. affair.The officers have decided to do as follows with regard to distribution of the books:About 20 copies, without any personal inscription, should be prepared for the affair itself, with one being presented to Rabbi Jur as the climax of the affair. The others should be distributed, one to a table, so that the guests might see what they paid for. These will later be collected and taken back.Meanwhile, copies of the book, which have been properly embossed, will be mailed to:All members of The Jewish Center, present or notEach authorAll guests, both those participating in the program and those invited by other guestsRemember that we had discussed the problem as to whether the English section should also be mailed to the Israeli Hebrew authors. Letter to Max Stern Regarding Distribution of Leo Jung Jubilee Volume (1962)

Dear Mr. Stern: I enclose a letter and an agreement from Bloch Publishing Company as to the distribution of the "Leo Jung Jubilee Volume." We shall be selling the book for $9.50. As you will notice, the agreement calls for a 50¢ return to The Jewish Center, i.e., $.75 net per volume, with an equal amount to the distributor. He will be in charge of advertisements, book reviewers, etc. I called Bloch, who offered me the identical agreement. A number of people with whom I have consulted all feel that Bloch is superior. N.L. – I sent a copy of the Jung Memorial Volume to Moshe Davis as a gift and he responded with considerable enthusiasm. Since you are featured and sent regards, I thought you would like to see the letter which he wrote about it, and you. Hope all is well through the summer. When we meet, remind me to tell you how you inspired the purchase of equipment on which this memo has been prepared. Regards to Mindy.The International Center for University Teaching of Jewish Civilization under the auspices of the President of Israel August 18, 1992Dear Arie, I am truly beholden to you for the gift copy brought by Mervin of Reverence, Righteousness, and Rahamanut, edited by Jacob J. Schacter. Please tell your good Rabbi that he has produced an excellent piece of work. You are quite right – it is an important volume of Jewish Americana, to which I shall have need to refer from time to time. Actually, the first study to which I turned was Judith Baumel and Jacob Schacter’s “The Ninety-three Bais Yaakov Girls of Cracow: History or Typology?” It is a thoroughly researched study by two people who themselves have an extraordinary relationship ensuing from their family history during the Shoah. I know Judith and appreciate her learning. Although I do not know Rabbi Schacter, I know of his many accomplishments. In this one case, however, I raised the question with Judith: why was it so necessary for them to do this essay? In a sense they answer the question in the last paragraph, leaving us off with the thought that the story could, or could not, have happened. From my own historical stance, I differentiate between legend as reality in history and legend as historical reality. From my Jewish emotional consciousness, I have lived in this instance over the years with Hillel Bavli’s elegy, which is now incorporated in so many anthologies and which I regularly recite on Yom Kippur in the prayers.
