Dear Rabbi Lamm: This past Shabbos I attended morning services at The Jewish Center for the first time. I was impressed by the dignity and order of everything. Your talks before the readings of the Torah and Haftorah were very good. I assume this is done every Shabbos and think this is a most wonderful thing. Your speech was timely as well as inspiring. To sum it up I am impressed with The Jewish Center and would like to attend regularly but am unable to do for one simple reason – the mechitza. Letter to William and Yemmi Strum about Their Jewish Center Performance (1966)

Dear Yemmi and Bill: All the thanks I expressed to you orally do not yet exhaust the gratitude you really deserve from all of us at The Center and myself in particular. Yemmi, I know how very, very hard you worked for this particular production. I know, too, that you did not always receive the kind of cooperation you wanted, and that it caused you a good deal of heartache. However, I am sure that you realize the extent of the appreciation of your superb performance by the congregation. Your friends not only remain your friends, but their admiration for you has increased tenfold because of both the dedication you bring to your tasks and the competence with which you perform them. That is the case not only with me, but with all those to whom I have spoken.Your direction, Yemmi, and your narration, Bill, were both done with great talent and created a wonderful and happy mood for all those of The Center who were wise enough and privileged enough to attend the social on Sunday night.
