רב וידיד מאד נכבד, מאשר אני קבלת מכתבך מעש"ק פר יתרו – ומקוה בהתאם למכתבך שהענין יסתדר בקרוב. אשמח גם לקבל את חות דעתך בקשר לסידור הרב בהודו – אם אושר התקציב על ידי האוניון ובאיזה גובה, ואם אפשר לשלח את הרב לשם כשימצא האיש המתאים. הרעיון על בן ישיבה שישתלם נראה לי. נראה לי אבל זה לא פותר את הבעיה הדחופה. אשר לבר מצוה רצוי שתשלח לי את רשימת הילדים הנכנסים השנה לגיל המצוות. השם, הכתבת, והשבת ונשלח לך בשבילם תעודות בר מצוה מירושלים מהר-ציון ונחברם עם ילדים בני בר מצוה הנכנסים באותה שבת גופא למצוות בישראל. אשמח לשמוע ממך. בכבוד רב, ד"ר ש.ז. כהנא, המנהל הכללי.נ.ב. כך הנני להודיעך שהרבגוסהולד לא נמצא כעת בארץכך האינפורמציה שלי אינה שלמה.

Exchange with Dr. Tartakower about Candidate for Bombay Rabbi and Strained Relations with Israeli Rabbinate (1962)

Dear Dr. Tartakower: Thank you for your letter of April 22nd. We will be happy to hear from Chief Rabbi Nissim concerning the appropriate candidate for Bombay. Once the right man is found and the Chief Rabbi recommends to us the undertaking of financial assistance in this project, I am sure that our commission will give it most sympathetic consideration. As you know, we corresponded with the Chief Rabbi concerning a previous candidate who unfortunately was not found acceptable.I brought the request of Dr. S. Sabath to the attention of the Chairman of our Publications Commission. It is with regret that I must inform you that this commission does not find itself in a position to finance the translation, though the merits of the book of Dr. Sabath are unquestionable.With kindest regards and all good wishes, I amSincerely yours,Dr. Samson R. Exchange with R. Gotthold about the Chief Rabbinate's Decision on the Bene Israel (1961)

Dear Rabbi Lamm, When I received your letter I knew it was a rather hopeless cause. The Shochtim had been neat-roaded through, Rabbi Ruvain Katz not attending out of protest. Since certain circles (Agudah) would like to make political hay out of it, I was told that whatever appeared in the press is all that will be published. Instructions to the readers how to handle B’nai Israel applicants have not been issued yet. Within the next 10 days it may be issued upon his directive. I doubt whether he’ll rescind it, though pressure is brought to bear on him and others is soon. If anything further will develop, I’ll let you know. Rabbi Nissim himself has sincerely to thank for your breaking out of the idea of sending Rabbi Shevitz to Bombay. In order to avoid losing ground there entirely, particularly after the Conservative Benjamin group has consented to leave him, possibly our Ministry together with the WJC may send him there for half a year. I personally am sorry that the UOJCA is taking such an attitude. Have you found anyone better? Keep well, Zev G.
