Exchange with Leonid Lamm about Their Possible Relation (1974)

Dear Mr. Lamm: Your name has come to my attention as one of our brothers in the Soviet Union who is aware and proud of his Jewishness, and who wants to emigrate to Israel. Since we share the same family name, I think we may be relatives. My father, Meir Shmuel Lamm, was born near Lwow which is today in the Soviet Union. His parents and grandparents before him lived in this same town of Kamienko. I suppose we have other relatives who lived in Jewish communities throughout Poland and Russia. I myself am American-born, and have lived here all my life. I am the rabbi of a large and influential congregation in New York City, and I am a professor of Jewish philosophy at Yeshiva University. I am married and have four children. There are a number of Lamm families in New York, but most of them are not related to us. I would appreciate hearing from you, learning of your family background and your family at present, and also of how you are doing. Is there anything I can do for you? I do not know if you understand or can write English. Do you understand Yiddish or Hebrew? I can make my way through French and German, but unfortunately I do not know Russian. Exchange with R. Green about Soviet Jewry Lecture Series (1969)

Dear Norman, When you were here last September, I mentioned a Soviet-Jewry series that I was going to prepare. The series is now scheduled for March 13, 20, 27. I am enclosing a copy of the first draft of our program. We will plan to combine two sessions each evening. It is my hope to have two representatives from every congregation and Jewish organization in attendance. The program is being co-sponsored by the Philadelphia Jewish Relations Council. During the past months we have had a lunchtime discussion group led by Rabbi Yaakov Homnick; the idea for which was prompted by the class you are giving at the 92nd Street Y. We have had 16 people indicating interest in attending, their busy schedules prevented no more than three or four from coming each week. We will have to go out now and find other people who are not as busy to sign up as well. The program has been well received and we will continue with it. Please give my best regards to Mindy. Dear Rabbi Lamm, I am very happy that our paths crossed at the Israeli Dance Festival yesterday. I had written to ask your permission to include “The Dayenu Address” in the Model Seder I compiled. I am glad that I had the opportunity to thank you in person for all that I have learned from your writings. To have been able to do this was important because it was an expression of עקרת הטוב to a person I respect and admire. I am enclosing the Seder Program and hope you like what you read. It was distributed by the Philadelphia office of Bnai Brith to all the lodges in the Eastern Pennsylvania–Delaware State Region. Thank you for letting me use the “Dayenu” selection. I look forward to reading more of your writings as you share them with your reading audience. May you and your family enjoy a meaningful Passover.
