Dear Norman, I happened to see your article in Panim el Panim. I not only agree with your conclusions – I already used it myself to a number of groups. I also thought you’d find the enclosed of interest. What I felt was missing from your article was the role of the coin. The bill is troubled and I felt Mafdal should have left the coalition over it. Raphael is also right that the authentic line is to blame for much of the problem and, in the present situation, more to blame than anyone else.

לכבוד הרב פרופסור נחום לאם שליט״א רב "המרכז היהודי", מנהטן ניו יורק שלום וברכה, התעוררתי לכתיבת מכתבי זה עקב קריאה בעיון של מאמרך "מסבר באימון למדינת ישראל", שהופיע ב"פנים אל פנים". התרשמתי במיוחד משתי נקודות במאמרך הנ״ל, המהווים מאז ומתמיד עקרונות מנחים בהשקפתה ובדרך פעולתה של תנועת פועלי אגודת ישראל. שמחתי על כך למצוא במאמרך הגדרות ברורות וקולעות על שני עניינים אלה, והם: א. אתה כותב במאמרך: "מבחינה אינטלקטואלית יהיה עלינו לקבל על עצמנו את מה שתיאולוגים בני זמננו מכנים תהליך של דה־מיתולוגיזציה. ציונים דתיים ורבנים מייחסים למדינת ישראל איכות משיחית מסוימת. הם רואים בקיומה, באופן מפורש או בלתי מפורש, את היסודות הראשונים לבניין מלכות המשיח שתקום ביום מן הימים. הם מכנים אותה 'אתחלתא דגאולה' ואנו מזכירים את מדינת ישראל בתפילותינו כ'ראשית צמיחת גאולתנו'. אך אין ספק שמדינה של יהודים שבה מפרידים בין דת ולאום יקשה עליה לתבוע לעצמה יומרות משיחיות רציניות." היה זה דבר משמח בשבילנו למצוא הגדרה מפורטת בדבריך להנחת יסוד בה דוגלת פא״י מאז הקמת המדינה: שעם כל התקשרותנו לארץ ישראל ולמדינה היהודית – היינו, להגשמת הציונות המעשית והטבעית, כפי שהיא באה לידי ביטוי בתורה שבכתב ובתורה שבעל פה – אין אנו מוסמכים לתת לתופעה ההיסטורית הגדולה של שיבת ציון בימינו הגדרות משיחיות כלשהן, כמו "אתחלתא דגאולה" או "ראשית צמיחת גאולתנו". אנו הולכים בדרכו של ד״ר יצחק ברויאר ז״ל, הרואה ב"שיבת ציון" של ימינו אתגר ליהדות התורה, לפעול ולעשות בכל הדרכים להשלטת התורה בחיי העם כולו – בכלכלה, בעבודה, בציבוריות ובחברה – כדי להתקדם לקראת הגאולה השלמה המקווה. ב. אתה כותב: "ולסיכום, הנדבנות האמריקאית חייבת לסגל לעצמה את העקרונות הללו בכך שתגביר את תמיכתה במוסדות וארגונים המנסים לספח את המפעל הזה – לצאת לבתי הספר התיכוניים, לאוניברסיטאות, לעיר ולכפר, לקיבוץ ולמושב, ולשוחח כדבר איש אל אחיו עם אלה הנמצאים עדיין מחוץ למחנה התורה. עלינו להקדיש יותר תשומת לב לאותם מוסדות דתיים, מגן ילדים ואילך, אשר מכינים נוער ישראלי דתי לחיים פוריים בתוך מדינת ישראל, המלמדים אותו שלא לסגת אל מסגרות הגטו בישראל אלא לשמש פה לרעיונות התורה ובשורתה. עלינו להגדיל את תמיכתנו בבתי הספר הללו, בישיבות, בבתי הספר התיכוניים, באוניברסיטאות ובבתי ה…

Dear Issy: I enclose a draft copy of a Proclamation which ought to be circulated, signed, and published as quickly and expeditiously as possible. I talked with the Rav about it, and he is very much in favor of the idea. Please show him the copy for possible revision. I have no pride of authorship; as long as it is done in time for maximum effect I’ll be happy. Perhaps you can contact a number of people, in different areas in public and academic life and ask them to obtain consent for the use of their names. Dr. Seymour Lachman, the Board of Education (who first proposed the idea to me) might know of others in his field. In city government you might try Marvin Schick and Drell Greer. Marvin may have recommendations for other academic too. Milton Furst of Y.U. may have a list of people. Offhand, I might mention Marvin Fox of Ohio State, Paul Rosenberg of Columbia, and Abraham Tennenbaum of Columbia. The petition should be sent to Golda Meir and published in the Jerusalem Post, in Haaretz (in Hebrew) — and how about the New York Times? My secretary is typing this up while I’m off to California, but you can contact me at any time. I’ll be at the Riviera Hotel in Palm Springs — she has my phone number. I’m sorry to burden you with this, but if the issue has not been settled by the time you get this letter, it is simply too important to delay.
