Dear Rabbi Goss: It is barely a week that I have returned from South Africa, but I wish to hasten to thank you for all your friendship and guidance during the time that I spent in your community. I feel that knowing you and speaking with you as I did has immeasurably broadened my own horizons. Whatever little I might have contributed to the community, I believe I gained much more especially as a result of knowing you. I do hope that you have long recovered from the illness which kept you in bed during my last day or two in Johannesburg. Please convey my very fondest regards to Mrs. Goss and to all our friends. I do hope and pray that the time will not be long that you will be visiting New York and I will have the opportunity to reciprocate in some measure your kindness towards me. Exchange with Ronald Misheiker about R. Lamm's South Africa Itinerary (1963)

Dear Mr. Misheiker: Thank you very much for your kind letter of September 16 which I just received. In accordance with your request, I cabled you today indicating that I could accept your invitation if you would revise your calendar to allow for my arriving in your city on Monday February 3 and leaving on Thursday February 20, P.O.I. I certainly hope that the difference of a little more than a week will not materially affect your plans for what I trust will be a most successful campaign. I have, of course, heard a great deal about Johannesburg Jewry, and have both written for and seen some of your outstanding periodicals. Mr. H. S. Liebgott, whom it was my pleasure to meet some weeks ago, added many important details, and your own letter was most enlightening. A few items remain to be clarified before final arrangements are agreed upon. One I mentioned to Mr. Liebgott, and that is – my itinerary. My previous experience in lecture tours in foreign lands has been that the tendency to prepare an overcrowded schedule is difficult to resist, but that in addition to taking its toll of one’s health, it is not always effective for the purpose of the visit. Beyond a certain limit, there sets in a law of diminishing returns. I would therefore like to see and approve of the final itinerary prepared in advance and sent to me here. Second, there is the question of financial arrangements. In order to accept your invitation I must give up a number of important lectures in the States with pay fees. I am eager, therefore, to know from you as soon as possible what your intentions are with regard to compensation beyond the necessary expenses incurred. The work you are doing is of the greatest significance, and I will be honored to assist in any way I can in advancing your goals of “hinukh” and encouraging the study of Torah. Dear Rabbi Lamm, Apologies for the delay in writing. However my parents only today forwarded their travelling dates and I hasten to advise you of the following: My parents leave for Israel on the 18th February. They have already sub-leased their apartment and moved to the holiday resort – Muizenberg, 15 miles out of Cape Town.
