Dear Mr. Raphael: Please forgive my writing in English but I have no Hebrew secretary and the pressure of business is such that it is easier for me to dictate than to write. I have not yet received the [redacted] from you. If it has not been sent yet, may I request that it be dispatched by air mail as soon as possible, I will be deeply grateful to you for this. Several years ago a friend of mine from Israel told me that R. Zve Yehudah Kook possesses many, many manuscripts from his late father, of Blessed memory. I understand that they are simply getting dusty and that these precious papers are in danger of being lost. I do not know how much truth there is to this report. However, if it is so, perhaps you can arrange for the manuscripts to at least be micro-filmed. I am sure that Mr. Michael will be willing to cover whatever expenses are involved in such activity.One final item: I appreciated very much your invitation some months ago to participate in the "Klmus" this coming summer, please God, to make up for my absence last summer. Exchange with R. Elkanah Schwartz about Publishing Papers on "New Currents on the Orthodox Scene" (1967)

Dear Rav Lamm – I hope this note finds you and yours well, and at the beginning of a happy, healthy, and fruitful year. Your remarks about my pamphlet project to encourage new writers are much appreciated, both for your having taken the time to respond and for the guidance. The outline has meanwhile been returned to my “ideas” file. Again I ask you for the benefit of your thinking, and hope you will similarly respond. Two summers ago, I organized and chaired a symposium at the Rabbinical Alliance convention on the theme of “New Currents on the Orthodox Scene.” Participants were Irving Glick for AOJS, Rabbi Shlomo Riskin for Yavneh, R. Yitzhak Gilat for Bar Ilan, and (by default) for COLPA, Rabbi Emanuel Rackman. Rackman prepared the paper for publication and then shortly left both YU and the OU. Saul Bernstein then took it in hand to publish it, although he had to cut and shorten my suggestions to him in order to reduce the length to fit their format. At the Glouster session, I met with Marvin Schick, including him in my remarks. He offered this suggestion – that if additional papers are prepared on other important new currents on the Orthodox scene, the project itself will acquire stature and usefulness. Such papers, if in mimeograph form, would in effect serve as “position papers” on these various trends. I have therefore prepared additional essays on the “Jewish Catalog Challenge” and “Outreach and the Traditional Community.” As such, if these were published as a pamphlet, they could assume some stature in themselves. It occurred that COLPA could sponsor such a project. Enclosed are the papers (which could be easily updated) and I return your envelope. Your thoughts and comments will be much appreciated. Exchange with R. Wengrov about the Torah Fellowship Foundation (1963)

Dear Rabbi Lamm: At the meeting of April 29, nifkad moshavecha. We were exactly four: Rabbi Jakobovits, Dr. Mandel, myself, and Gerson Bernstein. The meeting was relatively brief (three quarters of an hour) and was followed by a guided tour of the Fifth Avenue Synagogue. The date of the next meeting was set for June 3. Please take note. Now, we have a copy of the letter which Rabbi Lookstein wrote you on March 19, and Rav Kasher saw it before his departure. He instructed me then to send you the rough draft of an answer which the letter requires, and to ask you, in your kindness, to polish it as necessary and send it to Rabbi Lookstein. Unfortunately, today is the first opportunity I’ve found to attend to the matter. On May 12 there is to be a board meeting of the Wurzweiler Foundation, of which Rabbi Lookstein is president. We are hoping that he will authorize three fellowships (his vote or opinion will be the deciding factor) and it might be helpful if he receives his answer early next week.
