Dear Rabbi Gotthold: Enclosed please find a copy of a letter from Mr. Jhirad, dated August 30th, a copy of my reply to him dated September 10th, and a copy of his answer, dated September 17th, received this morning. We shall greatly appreciate your reaction to the statements contained in Mr. Jhirad’s letters. We are especially concerned with the apparent conflict between your decision and the opinion of Haham Gaon in matters of the conversion of minor children. Also, the problem of the Mikvaoth is most urgent. Our people there seem to be in a state of vexation and confusion. Clarification is, therefore, of the utmost urgency. Exchange with R. Gotthold about the Chief Rabbinate's Decision on the Bene Israel (1961)

Dear Rabbi Lamm, When I received your letter I knew it was a rather hopeless cause. The Shochtim had been neat-roaded through, Rabbi Ruvain Katz not attending out of protest. Since certain circles (Agudah) would like to make political hay out of it, I was told that whatever appeared in the press is all that will be published. Instructions to the readers how to handle B’nai Israel applicants have not been issued yet. Within the next 10 days it may be issued upon his directive. I doubt whether he’ll rescind it, though pressure is brought to bear on him and others is soon. If anything further will develop, I’ll let you know. Rabbi Nissim himself has sincerely to thank for your breaking out of the idea of sending Rabbi Shevitz to Bombay. In order to avoid losing ground there entirely, particularly after the Conservative Benjamin group has consented to leave him, possibly our Ministry together with the WJC may send him there for half a year. I personally am sorry that the UOJCA is taking such an attitude. Have you found anyone better? Keep well, Zev G.

ידידי ומכובדי, הרב נחום לאם שליט״א. אחרי דרישת שלומך הטוב ובתשובה למכתבך מעש״ק כי השאלה: השתלשלות העניינים כבר ידועה לך על כל פרטיה. מלשכתו של הרב הראשי שליט״א מסרו לי שהספר נשלח אליך מזמן (אולי בדואר רגיל), ולרבנים וינברג ורקמן בדואר אוויר. לנבואות על התפתחויות בעתיד אין להיכנס. העמדה הרשמית היא שההחלטה וההנחיות בעינן עומדות. אגב, הגאון ר׳ שלמה זלמן אויערבך מ׳קול הורה׳ קובל בפני בקשר לצעיר יהודה, מבומביי, שנתקבל כתלמיד בישיבה בקיץ שעבר על מנת שיחזור להדריך את בני ישראל בהודו (ושבינתיים נפגשתי עמו לפי בקשת ראש הישיבה שליט״א). הישיבה מספקת את כל צרכיו ולא קיבלה תשלום מכל גורם שהוא. הבטחתי להרב אויערבך לשאלך אם אתה יודע משהו על הדבר.
