My dear Rabbi Lamm, I am once again writing to you in connection with a young student of the Rabbi J. L. Zlotnik Seminary named [redacted]. He will be completing his teacher’s course at the Seminary at the end of this year but he wishes to pursue further Rabbinical studies at the Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan Yeshivah University. He is a very fine young man with a sterling character and a great desire to learn, and anything that you could do to help him would be greatly appreciated by me. Exchange with R. Newman about His American Lecture Tour (1964)

Dear Norman, I hope this letter will reach you in the best of health and good spirits and that by now you have had a chance of relaxing and recuperating from your exhausting tour of South Africa. As promised I am writing promptly, but not for the reason which prompted our correspondence in the first instance, that is, referring to the lecture tour I had in mind which, however, I cannot undertake this year or early next year, as you will no doubt remember from our last experience. My daughter and son-in-law are expecting a baby in May and it is not easy for me to leave her with such a young child for an extended period. I am now arranging for further circulation of your literature but of course it will reach you much later as it is coming by surface mail. I am also glad to give you the assurance that any inquiry in regard to the publication of your book, particularly in Israel, will be despatched for your dear consideration. Incidentally, mail will be despatched to you from New York. Should you ever have the opportunity to write on your experiences in South Africa, I would be most glad to read your impressions. There is a lot of good material to be found here. Misses of the Union of South Africa were discussing having a Symposium on the education of our young people in Israel, and a lengthy document giving exact details on conditions and needs was handed over. If I can be of assistance in this matter, I shall be happy to be of service. I was happy to have the opportunity of meeting your uncle, Rabbi J.M. Baumol. It is a hope you have conveyed my regards to him. I remains now for me to wish you and your family a very happy and enjoyable Pesach. Please also convey my regards to Rabbi and Mrs. Jung. Dear Mr. Misheiker: Thank you very much for your kind letter of September 16 which I just received. In accordance with your request, I cabled you today indicating that I could accept your invitation if you would revise your calendar to allow for my arriving in your city on Monday February 3 and leaving on Thursday February 20, P.O.I. I certainly hope that the difference of a little more than a week will not materially affect your plans for what I trust will be a most successful campaign. I have, of course, heard a great deal about Johannesburg Jewry, and have both written for and seen some of your outstanding periodicals. Mr. H. S. Liebgott, whom it was my pleasure to meet some weeks ago, added many important details, and your own letter was most enlightening. A few items remain to be clarified before final arrangements are agreed upon. One I mentioned to Mr. Liebgott, and that is – my itinerary. My previous experience in lecture tours in foreign lands has been that the tendency to prepare an overcrowded schedule is difficult to resist, but that in addition to taking its toll of one’s health, it is not always effective for the purpose of the visit. Beyond a certain limit, there sets in a law of diminishing returns. I would therefore like to see and approve of the final itinerary prepared in advance and sent to me here. Second, there is the question of financial arrangements. In order to accept your invitation I must give up a number of important lectures in the States with pay fees. I am eager, therefore, to know from you as soon as possible what your intentions are with regard to compensation beyond the necessary expenses incurred. The work you are doing is of the greatest significance, and I will be honored to assist in any way I can in advancing your goals of “hinukh” and encouraging the study of Torah.
