Dear Rabbi Lamm, I had to leave the "Exodus" assemblage early last Sunday and did not have the oppotunity to pay good-by or to tell you how much I particularly enjoyed your opening remarks. The Dayenu "dance" was superb and evoked a truly exciting (and excited) response. Thwe entire event was, in fact, a memorable one of which we all, and especially you, as chairman, can be found. Exchange with R. Sandrow about Fundraising for Soviet Jewry (1969)

Dear Rabbi Lamm: Please forgive my tardiness in not responding sooner to your letter of October 14th. I was in Israel this past summer and that is where I would like to be all year around. As to the main part of your letter which referred to the Student Struggle for Soviet Jewry, I want you to believe me that I am most sympathetic but at the present time I simply cannot commit myself to the raising of $1,000. To a colleague it is not necessary to repeat the fact that I am involved over my head in causes which cannot raise funds from any other sources. However, if you will be patient with me and will give me until the early Spring, I will try to see that you have some funds. I certainly cannot do it between now and the first of the year. After the first of the year I shall be going to Europe and Israel for meetings at the Hebrew University, etc. but when I come back I will secure some funds. Please acknowledge this letter so I can have it in my active file for action. Sincerely, Edward E. Sandrow

לכבוד איש יחיד ומיוחד, רב פעלים לתורה ולחסד, הרב הגאון סוהר״ר נחום לם שליט״א, מכובדי ונכבד יקרנו הדגול, בתקווה לשלומו ולבריאותו הטובה וכן לשלום הרבנית תחי׳, מתכבד אני לפנות לכבודו ולשוח בפניו דבר בית אולפנא. מעת פרוץ המלחמה הורע מצבנו הכספי בצורה חמורה, דבר שהתבטא בנעילת דלתות האולפנא בפני תלמידות חדשות שזה עתה שבו למולדת. מצב העלייה כיום, הכהוריח ב״ה לא פסק, ולא עוד אלא שגדל במספר כפול מן הרגיל. באולפנא 98 בנות בתנאי אש״ל ופנימיה כל ימי השבוע. תוכניות הלימודים כוללות הקניית השפה העברית, לימודי יהדות, סמינר לגננות, קורסים להנהלת חשבונות ולאנגלית, חוגים לתפירה ולמלאכה. לכבודי היהדות באולפנא מוכרים באופן רשמי כמכון תורני גבוה ללימודים תורניים. מאז יסוד האולפנא ועד היום הקימו דרכינו 43 בוגרות שהקימו בתים נאמנים בישראל ברוח מסורת ישראל. תלמידות בוגרות האולפנא ממשיכות בלימודים גבוהים יותר – במכללת ירושלים, באוניברסיטת בר אילן – וחלקן שבו למקום מגוריהן עם ההורים והסתדרו בעבודות חינוך. אך קשה לנו לפתור לבד בעיות כספיות בעידן זה. הריני בבקשתי הדחופה כי יואיל בטובו הגדול להיות לנו לאחי עזר ולאחי סמך בעזרה כספית מיוחדת, דבר שיהא בו לעודד אותנו בהמשך קיום מפעלינו, שהוא עדיין יחיד בארץ לקליטת בנות עולות ולקרבן לאבינו שבשמים. ביודעי לבבו הטהור ומעשיו הכבירים, ובמיוחד דאגתו האמיתית לגולת ישראל, בטוחים אנו בתשובתו החיובית בעין טובה וברוח נדיבה. המתפלל על שלומו, הצלחתו וטובו – יצחק קלפן.
