Exchange with R. Korn about Morality and the Command to Destroy Amalek (2004)

Dear R. Lamm, Yasher koach on your paper on the problematics of the mitzvah to destroy Amelek. I have given much thought to this issue, as it poses a severe moral and theological problem. Of course I am in sympathy with your “apologetics,” as you term it, and marvel at the energy you devoted to the issue. I prefer a more elegant approach, one that ultimately provides a more powerful argument. I am now traveling and don’t have the precise notes from a lecture that I gave to the U. of Chicago Divinity School and to a number of shuls in the metropolitan area and Boston. Here is my best attempt to reproduce the outline of the argument: 1. Along with you, I remain unconvinced by R. Moshe’s and the Rav’s reading in Rambam distinguishing between Amelek and the 7 nations. As you point out, the textual evidence is weak and empirically it makes no sense to say that Sanherev intermingled all the nations except for Amelek. I will speculate about what was really bothering the Soloveitchiks later, but let’s leave them aside for now. 2. Hazal did sense the moral problem with the mitzvah of killing innocent persons, as a literal reading of the mitzvah demands. [Your point that this also troubled the Torah is well taken.] This may be why R. Yehoshua laid down the principle that after Sanherev it was simply impossible, for technical reasons, to implement the mitzvah. The principle is actually irrational or at least unscientific, as it precludes any later empirical data identifying persons as Amelek or Canaanite. I have a different scenario.

Letter to Noam Frankel Regarding Shiur R. Lamm Delivered in Morasha (2005)

לכבוד הבחור הנעלה ר׳ נועם פרנקל הי״ו, שלומך ישגא, מה מאוד נהניתי מדבריך הנכונים באגרת ששלחת לי כשביקרתי במחנה "מורשה" ביום א׳ שעבר. שמחתי שהשעור שהגדתי אשתקד מצא חן בעיניך, ויותר מזה התענגתי מפירוש המאלף שמסרת לי בשם וקן ראשי הישיבה בימינו, ה״ה הגאון האדיר מוהר״ר זעליג עפשטיין שליט״א. אמנם פירושו על הסוגיא בגיטין דף נ״ו ע״ב הוא חידוש בפשט (וזה חשוב אף יותר מחידוש בפלפול!) והארה יקרה ב״ענוותנותו״ של רבי זכריה בן אבקולס בסיפור הטראגי של חורבן בית המקדש. ובקראי את דבריך בשם רבך נתעורר בי רעיון חדש באותו ענין. תמיד תמהתי שרבי יוחנן האשים את רזב״א ב״ענוותנות״, ולכאורה אין זה מוכרח מעצם הסיפור, עד שבא הרב עפשטיין שליט״א והסביר את הנאמר בגמרא כמו שמסרת לי את דבריו. אולם מלבד זה אינני חושב ש״ענוותנות״ היינו ענוות, כלומר שאדם יודע שהוא קרוב לכלום, שחסר לו שכל או נסיון או טובת לב וכדומה. הרי אותו רבי יוחנן הוא הוא שבמגילה דף ל״א ע״א אמר ״כל מקום שאתה מוצא גבורתו של הקדוש ברוך הוא אתה מוצא ענוותנותו – דבר זה כתוב בתורה ושנוי בנביאים ומשולש בכתובים. כתוב בתורה כי ה׳ אלהיכם הוא אלקי האלקים ואדוני האדונים, וכתיב בתריה עושה משפט יתום ואלמנה. שנוי בנביאים כה אמר רם ונשא שוכן עד וקדוש וגו׳, וכתיב בתריה ואת דכא ושפל רוח. משולש בכתובים דכתיב סולו לרוכב בערבות בי־ה שמו, וכתיב בתריה אבי יתומים ודיין אלמנות״. והייתכן לומר על הקב״ה ממ״ה שהוא קטן בעיניו ח״ו? והרי בפסוקים שרבי יוחנן מביא לראיה על ענוותנותו של הקב״ה אין בהם שום זכר לעניוות במובן המקובל ואף לא שום שייכות ל״ענוותנותו״ של רזב״א! ואם כן קשה להבין מדוע השתמש רבי יוחנן במונח ״ענוותנות״ בבקורת שלו על רזב״א. לכן נראה לבאר שיש בלשון הקודש שלש מלים הקרובות זו לזו גם במבנה גם במובן קצת, ואם כל זה יש מרחק חשוב ביניהן בהשגתן המדויקת. המונחים האלה הם: עניות, ענוות, וענוותנות. עניות פירושה חוסר אמצעים כספיים וגשמיים. ענוות פירושה המידה בה אדם משיג את עצמו כקטן וחסר־אונים, ובלע״ז – self-image חלש ובעל חסרונות. וענוותנות היא המידה שעל ידה אדם יכול להוריד עצמו ממדריגה גבוהה שזכה לה בכדי לטפל בעניינים או בני אדם שהם בדרגה נחותה יחסית, דברים או אנשים שלגביו הם פעוטים וחסרי משמעות. והנה שתים מהמלים הנזכרות – עניות וענוות – הן תכונות שאפשר לייחס…
