Dear Rabbi Lamm. שלום! I am a student at Barnard College. My home is in Chicago. Coming to a new city warrants various adjustments to the surrioundsing as well as finding one's place in this large city. Being that I am an observant and religious Jewess, I also haed to find a Shul that I could attend on שבת. After going to various shuls, I wanted to find a מקום קבוע where I could go to daven. I have attended your shul on a regular basis. I was at shul when you spoke on the immigration of Soviet Jews into Israel, I was astounded as well as distrubed to hear of the disgraful and deceiftul way in which they are being treated. Yet being in גלות limits the ways in which we can help improve and chnage this situation. At this moment צדקה seem to the means of keeping our brothers in Israel. Enclosed you will find a check which I am sure you will send to the proper people in Israel...

Dear Rabbi Lamm, Several months ago you wrote to Rabbi Klaperman regarding the son of Rabbi Schapiro, who was denied permission to leave from Belgorod. I was wondering whether you had any further word on this case, specifically, whether he has been allowed to emigrate as yet. We will continue our efforts in his behalf until word of his departure is received. However, it often takes weeks until we find out of the arrival in Israel of those on our lists. Exchange with R. Kowalsky about Advocacy for Dr. Schapira's Emigration from Soviet Russia (1972)

Dear Sholem: I am sending you enclosed xeroxes of correspondence I have had with Rabbi Shalom Schapiro of Tel Aviv. He has written to me about his son, scientist in Belgorod Oblastnoi, with his family, who wants to emigrate to Israel. They have been turned down for the fifth time now and Dr. Schapiro has been out of work for several months. There are two things I would like to ask from you: first, to have the RCA cable President Nixon, Dr. Kurt Waldheim, and Ambassador Dobrynin asking for his release. Second, to arrange for a package to be sent to Dr. Schapiro in Belgorod. Please let me know if anything can be done for him. Cordially, Rabbi Norman Lamm
