Exchange with Leonid Lamm about Their Possible Relation (1974)

Dear Mr. Lamm: Your name has come to my attention as one of our brothers in the Soviet Union who is aware and proud of his Jewishness, and who wants to emigrate to Israel. Since we share the same family name, I think we may be relatives. My father, Meir Shmuel Lamm, was born near Lwow which is today in the Soviet Union. His parents and grandparents before him lived in this same town of Kamienko. I suppose we have other relatives who lived in Jewish communities throughout Poland and Russia. I myself am American-born, and have lived here all my life. I am the rabbi of a large and influential congregation in New York City, and I am a professor of Jewish philosophy at Yeshiva University. I am married and have four children. There are a number of Lamm families in New York, but most of them are not related to us. I would appreciate hearing from you, learning of your family background and your family at present, and also of how you are doing. Is there anything I can do for you? I do not know if you understand or can write English. Do you understand Yiddish or Hebrew? I can make my way through French and German, but unfortunately I do not know Russian. Dear Rabbi Lamm, Several months ago you wrote to Rabbi Klaperman regarding the son of Rabbi Schapiro, who was denied permission to leave from Belgorod. I was wondering whether you had any further word on this case, specifically, whether he has been allowed to emigrate as yet. We will continue our efforts in his behalf until word of his departure is received. However, it often takes weeks until we find out of the arrival in Israel of those on our lists. לכבוד איש יחיד ומיוחד, רב פעלים לתורה ולחסד, הרב הגאון סוהר״ר נחום לם שליט״א, מכובדי ונכבד יקרנו הדגול, בתקווה לשלומו ולבריאותו הטובה וכן לשלום הרבנית תחי׳, מתכבד אני לפנות לכבודו ולשוח בפניו דבר בית אולפנא. מעת פרוץ המלחמה הורע מצבנו הכספי בצורה חמורה, דבר שהתבטא בנעילת דלתות האולפנא בפני תלמידות חדשות שזה עתה שבו למולדת. מצב העלייה כיום, הכהוריח ב״ה לא פסק, ולא עוד אלא שגדל במספר כפול מן הרגיל. באולפנא 98 בנות בתנאי אש״ל ופנימיה כל ימי השבוע. תוכניות הלימודים כוללות הקניית השפה העברית, לימודי יהדות, סמינר לגננות, קורסים להנהלת חשבונות ולאנגלית, חוגים לתפירה ולמלאכה. לכבודי היהדות באולפנא מוכרים באופן רשמי כמכון תורני גבוה ללימודים תורניים. מאז יסוד האולפנא ועד היום הקימו דרכינו 43 בוגרות שהקימו בתים נאמנים בישראל ברוח מסורת ישראל. תלמידות בוגרות האולפנא ממשיכות בלימודים גבוהים יותר – במכללת ירושלים, באוניברסיטת בר אילן – וחלקן שבו למקום מגוריהן עם ההורים והסתדרו בעבודות חינוך. אך קשה לנו לפתור לבד בעיות כספיות בעידן זה. הריני בבקשתי הדחופה כי יואיל בטובו הגדול להיות לנו לאחי עזר ולאחי סמך בעזרה כספית מיוחדת, דבר שיהא בו לעודד אותנו בהמשך קיום מפעלינו, שהוא עדיין יחיד בארץ לקליטת בנות עולות ולקרבן לאבינו שבשמים. ביודעי לבבו הטהור ומעשיו הכבירים, ובמיוחד דאגתו האמיתית לגולת ישראל, בטוחים אנו בתשובתו החיובית בעין טובה וברוח נדיבה. המתפלל על שלומו, הצלחתו וטובו – יצחק קלפן.
