Dear Rabbi Lamm, Recent months have seen the growth of a new adult group with the same type of high devotion which distinguished the Student Struggle for Soviet Jewry on the student level. A group of respected and responsible persons have come together to form the Center for Russian Jewry. Major responsibilities have been undertaken by men as varied as Elie Wiesel, the famous novelist and Mr. Melvin Stein, Legal Counsel to the Dept. of Housing and Urban Development for New York and New England. The Center is a response to the urgent need for putting the "war" for a quarter of our people on a systematic basis. We require a much intensified publicity campaign through the media, newsletters, literature, tapes, films, on the one hand and a fully set up community guidance and service organization on the other. A wide range of activities, including public advertisements, a newsletter, important conferences and speakers training seminars, is being rapidly developed and it is in regard to these that we wish to consult with you.Though we now have a number of committees, we have to constitute an authorative Board of Directors who will enunciate principles and articulate policy from time to time.It is for the purpose of asking you to join our Board that we are writing to you today. We are confident that our Center will become a major factor in the fight for Russian Jewry and we most earnestly hope that we may look forward to your cooperation along the linesjust indicatedThe first meeting will take place in our new offices on Wednesday, January 11th at 8 P.M.Hoping that we may hear from you at yourearly convenienceJacbb Birnbaum

Exchange with R. Sandrow about Fundraising for Soviet Jewry (1969)

Dear Rabbi Lamm: Please forgive my tardiness in not responding sooner to your letter of October 14th. I was in Israel this past summer and that is where I would like to be all year around. As to the main part of your letter which referred to the Student Struggle for Soviet Jewry, I want you to believe me that I am most sympathetic but at the present time I simply cannot commit myself to the raising of $1,000. To a colleague it is not necessary to repeat the fact that I am involved over my head in causes which cannot raise funds from any other sources. However, if you will be patient with me and will give me until the early Spring, I will try to see that you have some funds. I certainly cannot do it between now and the first of the year. After the first of the year I shall be going to Europe and Israel for meetings at the Hebrew University, etc. but when I come back I will secure some funds. Please acknowledge this letter so I can have it in my active file for action. Sincerely, Edward E. Sandrow

Letter from Jacob Birnbaum about Achievements of Student Struggle for Soviet Jewry (1964)

Dear Rabbi Lamm, Many thanks for the $100 check for which I enclose this receipt. In the 2 weeks from the 26th of April to May 11th, we have pulled off three major achievements. The development of the organization within this time has been fantastic. By the end of the month we hope אי״ה to have achieved a broadly conceived fast near the Soviet museum, lasting a week with every college represented as well as some of the main ישיבות גדולות
