I do hope that none of the actions of Rabbi Gotthold nor any of the decisions he made was really in contradiction to any P'sak issued by you, for this would make matters very difficult indeed.We shall greatly appreciate your good advice how to proceed. Letter from Haham Gaon about Difficulties Finding a Rabbi for India (1962)

My dear Rabbi, I am sorry that I did not answer your letter of October 2nd before, but I have been trying to see whether a qualified Orthodox Rabbi, preferably Sephardi, could be found here who would be ready to go to Bombay. Unfortunately, my search has not been successful at all. I agree with you that unless something is done with the Indian Community in Bombay, we shall entirely lose this community. The problem of Bene-Israel is no better, and I have spoken to some members of that community who have come to see me. They still feel very embittered about the treatment that the Bene-Israel are receiving in Israel.As you probably know, I hope to be in New York some time at the beginning of November, and then I shall be able to discuss with you this whole problem in a personal way.With all best wishes and taking this opportunity of wishing you all a very Happy New Year,Yours as ever, Haham

Letter from Haham Gaon to Haham Gaon about His Rulings for India, Israeli Reticence to Join R. Gotthold's Mission, and the Need for a Rabbi (1963)

I am in receipt of your letter as well as the enclosures of Rabbi Gotthold. As I wrote to you in my previous letter, I felt that many of the accusations made against Rabbi Gotthold were not justified. I have known him for some time and he always left a very good impression on me. There is no doubt that the man was let down, not only because nobody was to be found to go with him from England, but because the Rabbi who was to accompany him from Israel refused to go at the last moment. I think that is something that ought to be put right before any other delegation goes to India. In my opinion, it was unpardonable for the Rabbi who had promised to go from Israel to try and back out at the last moment, and it was because that Rabbi refused to go that Dayan Grossnass also refused to allow any Rabbi from the Beth Din to accompany Rabbi Gotthold and thus make his task easier.
