Dear Norman: It is a real pleasure to join the large numbers of your well-wishers in congratulating you on your most distinguished appointment as President of Yeshiva University. It was a wise and ideal decision. We are all confident that you will bring honor and great leadership to the Yeshiva and inspiration to Klal Yisroel. Lee and I especially rejoice as Bnei Hamishpocho. By coincidence, I just read the fine biographical sketches of your family in the republished Sefer of your late grandfather, זצ"ל. Your work and contribution will surely be a great and fitting continuation of a wonderful family tradition. I am enclosing a check for the book fund, as suggested by your uncle. Dear Norman, Congratulations on your appointment. This was, of course, bound to come: strange that this time the best man available was elected to our important position. I don’t wish you good-bye, not only because I wish you well personally but also, and mainly, because I wish Yeshiva University – and perhaps I ought to say, Judaism at large – well. I believe it is not belittling the achievements of Dr. Belkin if I say that we have reached a stage at which Y.U. needs a new direction, a comprehensively integrated educational philosophy, and an intellectual, devoted confrontation with the problems of the day. You, belonging to another generation, fully involved in the problematics of the contemporary situation, are able to do the job. Speed and mazal tov. Your lecture was very well received and your anticipated impact on our community did not fall short. I regret to inform you that due to some unknown reason your lecture did not come out on the tape. I feel terrible about this but I’m sure you understand. I believe that I heard you have accepted the position left vacant by Rabbi Rackman. Is this true?
