בדיני ומנהגי בית הכנסת (1971)

לשאלת כיוון הוצאת הס״ת והכנסתו: ר' המקורות שהובאו באנצקלופדיה התלמודית כרך ח' עמ' תע״ח ותפ״ג. מכולם נראה ברור שהכיוון הוא תמיד חד-סטרי, מטעם כל פינות שאתה פונה לא יהיו אלא לימין. ועוד מוכח משם שהכיוון הוא בהיפוך מהילוך השעון, כלומר ממזרח, שהוא ההיכל, לצפון שהוא התיבה, ומשם לדרום ועד ההיכל. והענין המא שהחזן בהוצאת הספר עומד עם פניו אל התיבה ואחוריו להיכל, נמצא שימינו הוא צפון וכו', ובמשנה איזהו מקומן, דמו טעון ד' מתנות וכו' וכו' ושם ג״כ הסדר כנגד הילוך השעון. ואילו בנשיאת כפים הוא להיפך, שמסתובבים כדרך השעון, עי' או״ח סי' קכ"ח. והטעם לזה, שבנ״כ הכהן מתחיל בפניו אל ההיכל, נמצא ימינו הוא לדרום, וכל פינות וכו'.לענין אם יפה עושים כשעומדים ואחורינו כלפי ההיכל כשהוא פתוח. אע"פ שלא מצאתי דבר זה מפורש, רמז לזה יש. ר' דברי הערוה״ש או"ח קכ"ח ס"ק י"ח, וז"ל: וכמה חביבים ישראל לפני הקב״ה שהרשה לכהנים לעמוד אחוריהם כלפי ההיכל בשביל ברכות ישראל, עכ"ל. ומוכח שזוהי רשות מיוחדת שניתנה לכהנים ובלעדי זה הדבר מכוער ובפרט כשההיכל פתוח, שנראה כאילו פונים עורף אל התורה.ועי׳ תשובות הרמב"ם בפאר הדור סי' ק״נ שמי שעומד בחוץ ואחריו לביהכנ״ס מזלזל בביהכנ"ס והוא כאותם שנאמר עליהם (יחזקאל ח,ט״ז) אחוריהם אל היכל ה'. ועי' סוכה נ”א ע״ב שהיו אומרים אבותינו שהיו במקום הזה אחוריהם אל ההיכל, וע"ש דנ״ג ע"ב ג״כ.

Dear Rabbi Lamm, It has been some time since I have seen you, and I trust all is well. After receiving Semikha from Yeshiva, I spent two years at the Near Eastern Dept. of Brandeis. I currently am teaching in the Hebrew Dept, (or rather, am the Hebrew Dept.) in the State University at Oneonta, a pleasant community midway between Binghampton and Albany (i.e., in the middle of nowhere).I would be grateful for your comments on the following matter. A boy has recently come to me for conversion, in order to marry his Jewish girl-friend. As I have never handled a conversion before, I thought it might be presumptious of me to get involved before discussing it with someone experienced.Before asking my questions, let me describe the specific case, [redacted] comes from liberal Protestant parents, who do not object to his converting. He is a bright, pleasant fellow, considering himself agnostic. The girl wants her children to be raised Jewish (she told me that even if [redacted] is not accepted for conversion, she will make him sign a paper that she can raise the children Jewish). Her mother is strongly opposed to the "shidduch;" but her father likes the boy's fine character and intelligence.I am familiar with the relevant sources in the Shulhan Aruch and meforshim and 'Igrot Moshe. However, since my knowledge and opinions on this matter are theoretical, I feel I should ask your opinion on such matters as 1) whether or not to accept the boy; 2) if accepted, what course of study – if any – before final conversion –; 3) making arrangements for the conversion, as הטפת דם ברית, etc.I thank you in advance for considering this matter. מעלות כבודו הרב הנעלה מורנו הרב נחום לאם שליט״א, שלום וברכת מועדים לשמחה! קראתי בעניין את מאמרו בחוברת האחרונה של הדרום – אין דיני פסול כהונה לנסיעת כפיים, ואמרתי להעירו בדברים אחדים אשר לדעתי לא דק בהם, והדברים נוגעים למעשה: 1) כבוד תורתו הניח כיסוד דפסולו של עובר עבירה דנכרי – דמומר כנכרי לכל דבריו.
