Exchange with Abraham Jhirad about Recruiting Rabbi for India (1961)

Dear Rabbi, Your Berakha for the New Year shall go a long way in giving me courage and strength to work hard for the noble cause of strengthening authentic Judaism in the ancient Jewish community of India. By the grace of the Almighty, we received most valuable guidance from you in a number of our problems – religious and otherwise – and we feel confident we shall receive the same עד עולם. Together with my letter of June 25, 1961, I had forwarded copies of my letters to Dr. Weiss and Dr. Tartakower, with regards to the deputation of an Israel Rabbi to India. It appears from Dr. Tartakower's letter of October 20, 1961 (copy enclosed) that possibly no correspondence was entered into by the UOJCA with Rabbi Nissim on this issue. As a matter of fact, I was under the impression that you or Dr. Weiss would probably discuss this business with Rabbi Nissim during your visit to Israel for the conference. As you know, if the UOJCA is to be on a sounder religious footing, the presence of a Rabbi is most necessary. Dr. Weiss, I understand, is on a tour and all matters are now being handled by Mr. Feuerstein. Could you kindly request Mr. Feuerstein to move the Overseas Commission to consider whether it will be feasible for them to accept Rabbi Nissim's offer? I am sure the Jewish Agency in Israel would be prepared to share the expenditure with the UOJCA. (A copy of my letter to Mr. Feuerstein is enclosed).We have had no word from Rabbi Gotthold, but I am given to understand by Samuel's father that Samuel is now admitted to the Yeshiva with effect from August 1, 1961 for the regular course. The Tefillin (money for which Mr. Max Stern so kindly procured from his friend) are not yet received, and there is absolutely no news about them.I am also awaiting the decision of the Overseas Commission with regards to the Hebrew and Religion classes we have started and we propose to start.Mebasser’s October issue also could not be published for lack of funds.Mr. Penkar has submitted a schem…

Letter from Abraham Jhirad about Fundraising, Burial, and Other Matters (1961)

Dear Rabbi, I acknowledge with thanks your kind communications of June 4, 8 and 15, 1961. I have not heard from Mr. Dudley Feit yet, but my colleagues and I would be only too pleased to meet with the Feits and show them round. The 'affair' in Israel has had tremendous reaction in India, especially Bombay and our Editor, whom we had given a free hand as far as Editorials are concerned, has become a bit too bitter about the issue and I sincerely hope, it does not cost us the loss of a few friends.I received a letter the other day from Samuel in Israel and he writes to say that the temporary residence Visa, issued by the Consulate in India, has not yet been extended or renewed. He could not be given much money, when he left Bombay. I hope he is allowed some pocket allowance by the University, for various small things, he might need and are not supplied there. I wonder if I can request Rabbi Gotthold about it, when I write to him next.[redacted] tells me that he has forwarded the application for admission to you for onward transmission to the Yeshiva University. I shall be grateful to have advance intimation about the acceptance or otherwise by the University.Dr. Weiss sent us a detailed letter about financial matters and the various publications, he has arranged to mail to us. We shall try to use them to the best advantage possible. A copy of our letter to Dr. Weiss is enclosed for your information. Could you kindly inform him that a Hazan has been appointed at the Panvel Synagogue on an initial salary of Rs. 70/- P.M., since we wrote to him.A copy of Dr. Tartakower's letter to Mr. B.B. Benjamin has been published in 'Mebasser' (mailed to you seperately) solely for political ends. Letter from Dr. Weiss to Abraham Jhirad about the Halachic Permissibility of Using an Old Cemetery for New Graves (1961)

To: Mr. A.D. Jhirad, From: Dr. Samson R. Weiss, Subject: Addition to Old Cemetery. Concerning your inquiry about the use of the old cemetary for additional graves, please be informed that Rabbi Lamm discussed this matter with the appropriate Halachic authorities who agreed with him on the following ruling: You state that the average height of the coffin is 15 to 18 inches. Therefore, the same height of additional earth must be placed on top of the old cemetary. Then, new graves may be placed on this cemetary by virtue of this additional layer of soil.cc: Rabbi Norman Lamm
