Dear Mr. Jhirad: Due to my frequent absences from New York in the past two months, our correspondence has suffered somewhat and I apologize for the delay of my reply to your various letters. I met last Friday with Rabbi Lamm, before he left for his summer vacation. My reply accordingly also covers the correspondence directed to him. I shall endeavor to send you as soon as possible the books you requested in your letter of January 19th, directed to Rabbi Lamm, and in your letter of May 3rd, directed to me, at least all those which are immediately available. I am happy that the misunderstanding about your assumption of the duties of Executive Director has been cleared up. The details of your duties have been outlined to you in Rabbi Lamm’s communication of May 21st to which you have already replied. It was good to read of the success of the youth activities and the classes. I am perturbed, though, by your notion that you have to spend a part of your salary on fruits and soft drinks for the children. Likewise, in your letter of May 3rd you mention that you did not feel authorized to spend the necessary funds for the trip Rabbi Lamm had suggested to the outlying districts. Whenever such special expenditures not foreseen in the budget are necessary and no funds are available, please notify me and we here will try our very best to make the funds available to you.

Dear Rabbi Lamm: Many evenings are passed in the vacuum of vapidity, and so when one finds an evening filled with so much human material (which you so aptly presented Monday evening), one can count the evening well spent; no, not well spent, but time enriched in the continued weaving of the mosaic pattern of our peoples. Your talent as a speaker does not need an accolade from us, rarely have we heard a speaker encompass as much as you did in the short time allotted to you, so much information garnered about a legendary fragment of our peoples.This letter is being written because of the impact your revelations had upon us. Your compassion, sensitivity, and insight to the needs of these people will, we are sure, give them hope for their future, in the sea of indifference which until now seemed to engulf them.Miss Mae and I do not know what plans you have to help this group. Letter to Moses Feuerstein about the JDC in India (1961)

Dear Moe: I am acknowledging receipt of your two most recent letters, the first a reminder about the J.D.C. in India and the second a request for someone to represent the Union in the U.N. committee. Let me say first of all that if the United States missile program were as well-scheduled as your missive program that we might be getting someplace in international rocketry. Now, concerning the J.D.C. – whatever can possibly be done from America has already been done. I have been corresponding with Gilbert, the J.D.C. man, Manasseh, our president, and Jhirad, our executive director. Whatever other pressures can be put on J.D.C. to work along with us will have to wait until Rabbi Jung’s return sometimes next week.With regard to the U.N, committee, I am not quite sure what is needed, nor why a man of financial means is necessary for this task.
