Commentary on Em Kol Chai (1980)

When Adam calls his wife Chavvah, the reason given is that she is אם כל חי. This has proven difficult to all commentators: after all, she may be the mother of Cain, or all living humans, but not all living beings? This has occasioned a number of sophisticated answers, none of them fully satisfactory. I suggest that the word חַי and חַוָּה have alternative meanings. Whereas the root in Hebrew means "life," in Aramaic it means "speech." Thus, "to tell" in Aramaic is להחויא. Similarly, in Hebrew the root appears in the expression חֲווֹת דָּעַת, as in Job: ואזחל ואירא מחות דעי אתכם.Adam was born with intellect, but before he had Eve he had no one to talk to. The animals with whom he dealt, were not capable of conversation. When Eve was created, he was able to talk with her, and he marvelled at her speech (volubility?). He noticed that the child Cain also spoke, in contradistinction to other animals. Therefore he called her חזי׳ because she was ג5 חי f It , the mother of all conversing beings.This explains the verse — and also the common human prejudice that women are talkative ...

בראשית ג־כ: "ויקרא האדם שם אשתו חוה כי הוא היתה אם כל חי". והנה כמה שאלות נשאלות – האם באמת היתה לאם "כל חי" או רק לבני אדם? האם היתה האם לפילים, לחמורים, לגמלים? מדוע בא פסוק זה לאחר החטא, ולא בשעה שנבראה חוה? שם, קרא לה "אשה" ועכשיו קרא לה "חוה". מה פירוש הדברים? ספר בראשית פרק ב פסוק ז: "וייצר יהוה אלהים את האדם עפר מן האדמה ויפח באפיו נשמת חיים ויהי האדם לנפש חיה". תרגום אונקלוס על פרק ב פסוק ז: "וברא יי אלהים ית אדם עפרא מן אדמתא ונפח באפוהי נשמתא דחיי והות באדם לרוח ממללא". רש״י על פרק ב פסוק ז: "לנפש חיה – אף בהמה וחיה נקראו נפש חיה אך זו של אדם חיה שבכולן שנתוסף בו דעה ודבור". אבן עזרא על פרק ב פסוק ז: "וטעם לנפש חיה – שהלך מיד כמו החיות ולא כתינוקים". רמב״ן על פרק ב פסוק ז: "וזה טעם 'לנפש חיה', כלומר ששב האדם להיות נפש בה חיים, אחרי שהיה חרש את חרשי אדמה, כי הלמ״ד תבוא בהפוכים, כמו והיו לדם ביבשת (שמות ד ט), ויהי לנחש (שם ד ג), וישם את הים לחרבה (שם יד כא). אבל אונקלוס אמר והות באדם לרוח ממללא – נראה שדעתו כדברי האומרים שהם נפשות שונות וזאת הנפש המשכלת אשר נפחה השם באפיו היתה בו לנפש מדברת וכן נראה לי מדעת רבותינו". ספורנו עה״ת ספר בראשית פרק ב פסוק ז: "ליצירת האדם בירר עפר מן האדמה חלק נכבד ממנה: ויפח באפיו נשמת חיים. נפש חיונית מוכנת לקבל צלם אלהים כאמרו ונשמת שדי תבינם. מ״מ ויהי האדם לנפש חיה – היה עכ״ז חיה בלבד בלתי מדברת עד שנברא בצלם ודמות". כלי יקר על פרק ב פסוק ז: "אע״פ שנפח ה׳ באדם נשמת חיים המשכלת מ״מ ויהי האדם בתחלת הויתו לסתם נפש חיה כשאר בעלי חיים כי אדם עיר פרא יולד (איוב יא יב) ועיקר שלימותו תלוי בחריצות השתדלותו וטוב בחירתו כשיפקח עיני שכלו בבואו בימים, אבל בתחילת הויתו אע״פ שכבר נופח בו נשמת רוח חיים מכל מקום אין הנשמה בו בפועל כי אם בכח לבד ואם לא ישנס מתני זריזותו לצאת בראש החלוץ ללחום מלחמת ה׳ הרי הוא בבהמיותו ונמשל כבהמה". בראשית ב־יט: "(ויצר ה׳ אלקים מן האדמה כל חית השדה ואת כל עוף השמים ויבא אל האדם לראות מה יקרא לו וכל אשר יקרא לו האדם נפש חיה הוא שמו)". שאלות – האם הביטוי "נפש חיה" הוא מלעיל, שמתאר את האדם, או מלרע, דהיינו שכל אחד מהבהמות והחיות הוא נפש חיה ואדם קרא לכל מין בשם מיוחד? האם יש שייכות בין הביטוי הזה כאן לאותו ביטוי ל…

Shabbat Bereishit (1968)

The Book of Lamentations comes to an end with an anguished cry of hope, a plea for restoration: hadesh yamenu ka-keddem, "renew our days as of old." It is a cry that we repeat every Sabbath as part of our prayers. The Rabbis towards the end of Mid. Ekhah Rabati analyze that verse. They tell us that the word keddem should not be understood as a temporal reference but as a spatial one: it refers not to olden days, but to a place, namely, East of Eden. They refer this word to the verse in the first Sidra: Va-yegaresh et ha-adam, the Lord expelled Adam from the Garden of Eden, va-yashken mi1keddem le'gan eden et ha-keruvim v'et lahat herev ha-mit,hapekhet lishmor et derek etz ha-hayyim, and He placed at the east of the Garden of Eden (at keddem of gan-eden) the cherubim and the flash of the turning sword in order to guard the way to the Tree of Life.What a strange statement! We ask God to restore our days, to renew our life, as in the days of keddem — and the Rabbis say this refers to the expulsion from the Garden of Eden! One would imagine that we would ask God to renew our days as they were in Paradise, not after we were chased out of Paradise.But there lies here a great and marvelous secret which the Rabbis tried to teach us.Every man and every woman has his own private gan eden, the paradise of his dreams and his youthful ambition. For some people it is great wealth, walking into a life where he has millions at his disposal. For another man it is a great novel that he will write without sweat, a great scientific discovery without perspiration, the great legal theories or philosophical discourses that he will develop at the drop of a hat, or a life of love and popularity and fame and happiness and satisfaction.What the Rabbis try to tell us is that this kind of paradise which hangs on the gossamer threads of our imaginations and is glued together by the unreal cement of our wish-fulfillment, is something that is terribly dangerous, that if we try to enter it we simp…
