All students must read N. Lamm, Faith and Doubt, chap. I and chap. III. Précis of chap. I must be submitted by midterm date, and that of chap. III by the last regular session of the semester. Reports – one report by each student, to be submitted by midterm date: a) Lev Shestov, Athens and Jerusalem; b) the behaviorism debate: B.F. Skinner, Beyond Freedom and Dignity, and Noam Chomsky, New York Review of Books, December 30, 1971; c) faith as a mitzvah in Maimonides; d) synopsis of Mortimer Adler et al., The Idea of Freedom, vol. I (Institute for Philosophical Study); e) the philosophical nature of halakhic norms – Faith and Doubt chap. Research papers – examine the following to determine views on “character.” Does the thinker in question have a consistent and systematic view of character? If there is no single rule you can discern, can you determine if there are specific ethical notions or moral traits which are especially valued? Are there any problems in character, or in ethical philosophy, that the author takes up? a) Hazon Ish – there are also a number of other works that have recently appeared on the Hazon Ish; b) R. Shneur Zalman of Ladi – the secondary sources will guide you to the primary sources. See Teitlbaum (vol. Types of Jewish Spirituality (2000)

Emphasize the types of Jewish spirituality, especially the normative (discussed in my Shema book, especially kavannah) and the ecstatic/Hasidic. 2. What is the difference between Jewish spirituality and secular/New Age spirituality? The former is always tied in to Torah. Even Hasidism, when it developed the ABG form of spirituality, and other forms of spirituality always struggled with having to make sure that it did not violate Torah in the case that it was not specifically sanctioned by Torah (the “adiaphora” or reshut). 3. The question of a non-theistic or non-Torah form of spirituality was first confronted by the Gaon in the story recorded by RH concerning the man who had visions which the Gaon knew were correct, but he banished the man because it was not Torah-related. 4. Spirituality & Science: On TV (CNN) yesterday, to celebrate the millennium, they interviewed a Dr. Clark who had something top do with Kubrick's "2001." (He was in Sri Lanka at the time.) His wise, perspicacious reply as to what he thought of the future of religions, was, "I don't believe in God and I don't disbelieve in her. I believe the future belongs to Science and Spirituality." In a way, this glib answer by a reputed intellectual (?) reveals something of the mind-set of many people as we go into the new century. The phenomenal advances of technology reinforce the religion of Scientism, which is as valid as that of any other superficially sophisticated cult. Science-as-religion=idolatry. And the idolatry is related to the question of spirituality — as Clark rightly juxtaposed them. How? Scientism denies the metaphysical. The fact that science, as a method, simply does not deal with what is beyond the measurable and quantifiable here-and-now, is transmuted into a positive denial of the existence of anything beyond the material. הפנאי במוסר היהודי (1990)

בספר "אוטופיה" שפירסם סיר תומאס מור בשנת 1516 מביע המחבר את תחזיתו – שבלי ספק העלתה בת־צחוק על פני קוראיו אנשי המעשה – של שבוע עבודה בן ששים שעות. מבחינת היחס שבין עבודה ופנאי בחברה המודרנית, הרי אנו בוודאי חייבים בימינו חיי אוטופיה – שאלה שונה לגמרי היא אם תוצאות חלוקת הזמן כיום מבטאות אוטופיה. הפנאי החדש שייך כעת כמעט לכולם – לא רק לאריסטוקרטיה – והוא הולך ותופס את מקומה של העבודה בבסיס התרבות. גם עבודתנו נעשתה נינוחה מבעבר, והערצת החריצות מפנה את מקומה ל"הערצה המודרנית של חוסר־המאמץ". שינוי תרבותי זה מוליד השלכות דתיות וחברתיות: בעיית הפנאי היא שאלת השימוש בזמן – והזמן הוא בעצם החיים. כבר נאמר ש"פנאי הוא מפתח בחקר משמעות החיים", ולכן ראוי לפתח מוסר יהודי של פנאי. אף שאין ודאות ש"חלה התפוצצות פנאי", ברור שיש שינויים – חלקם חיוביים, חלקם בעייתיים. בעיית הפנאי אינה שמורה רק לעשירים או מובטלים – אלא לכל אדם. למעשה, רבים מהנהנים ביותר מזמן פנוי אינם ערוכים להשתמש בו באופן משמעותי – ובכך הפנאי הופך ממנוחה למקור של חרדה. במובן הזה, "שיעמום" הופך לבעיה קיומית – תוצאה של זמן פנוי לא ממומש. חז"ל כבר הכירו בכך כשאמרו "שחוק וקלות ראש מרגילין לערווה" ו"בטלה מביאה לידי שיעמום", והזהירו ממצב שבו האדם שאינו פעיל יפנה לדיכאון, שחיתות או אנרכיה. מכאן חשיבותו של מוסר פנאי יהודי. אף שלא גובשה השקפה יהודית מובהקת על פנאי – אפשר לבנותה מתוך מקורות. חז"ל לא זלזלו בעבודת כפיים, אך לא ראו בה ערך מוחלט; ערכים עליונים כמו תלמוד תורה עמדו מעליה. המנוחה, לפי רס"ג ואחרים, אינה מטרה אלא אמצעי, ומקבלת ערך רק כשהיא באה בעקבות עבודה. ביהדות, הדגם האלוקי של יצירה ונופש – של ששת ימים עבודה ויום מנוחה – מעצב את היחס לאדם. שלא כאלוהי אריסטו ה"משותק הנצחי", או האל הניאו־אפלטוני הפועל בהכרח – אלוהי התנ"ך יוצר מתוך חירות, ושובת מתוך רצון – והאדם נדרש להידמות לו: לעבוד ולנוח. קדושת הזמן ביהדות – ובמיוחד קדושת השבת – מדגישה שהמנוחה עצמה היא חלק מהבריאה. כך מפרש ר' יצחק אברבנאל את "ויכולו" – מלשון תכלית, יעד. השבת היא תכלית ששת ימי המעשה – לא הפסקה אקראית, אלא פסגת הקיום. מנוחה יהודית איננה רק העדר מלאכה – אלא הפניית היצירתיות פנימה, לבניית האישיות. לא הפסקת מעשה אלא התחלה חדשה של אדם מחודש. שני מונחים –…
