Letter to R. Soloveitchik about Draft of Paper to be Presented in December (1972)

Dear Rabbi Soloveitchik:

At the last Geneva Conference, a number of the members of the Jewish team were assigned various papers to be presented as the Jewish positions in the next round of talks scheduled to take place in early December. One particular theme was assigned to me, and I have just finished preparing a brief paper on the subject.

Because it is quite sensitive, I take the privilege of sending you enclosed a copy of the paper, as well as my letter to Rabbi Henry Siegman on the subject.

There are other matters I want to discuss with you as well, and I wonder if we can arrange to meet at your convenience in New York some time next week אי"ה. However, because this paper must be submitted in final form as soon as possible, my conversation with you cannot wait until next week, and I hope you will not mind if I therefore call you sometimes during this weekend to ask for your opinion.

Respectfully,

Rabbi Norman Lamm

Dear Henry:

I am sending you enclosed my first draft copy of the paper which was assigned to me at the last Geneva Conference.

I regret, once again, that your letter suggesting a much earlier deadline for this paper never arrived, and that I am therefore technically late with this manuscript. Because I do want to give my colleagues, both here and in Israel, an opportunity to acquaint themselves with some of my thinking on the subject, I am sending you a copy of this manuscript which, I again emphasize, is only a draft. I may very well want to change a point here or there, and perhaps even revise some substantive portions.

Cordially,

Rabbi Norman Lamm
