After much serious discussion, we decided that it would not be right to let you pay for our hotel bills. However, the fare for the air trip... Is, don’t give up on Springfield. Your quote from Elie Wiesel as to indifference being the opposite of love is correct and it ought to inspire you to do something instead of just being bitter about those who are ruining things. Incidentally, Wiesel and his wife will be over at my house tonight and I will tell him about his lack of influence in Springfield. The reports I have been receiving have all mentioned, first and foremost, the extremely prominent and successful part that you personally played in making this what has been described to me as the most notable weekend in Kodimoh's history. I thought I would let you know how thrilled I am to hear this wonderful news. Dear Alex: While I do not know if it is yet official, I do know that it is final, and I therefore hasten to offer you my warmest congratulations and best wishes upon your election as Rabbi of Kodimoh, a synagogue in which I spent five of my happiest years. Kodimoh has many problems, and it will not take you long to acquaint yourself with them. But there are also great opportunities in Kodimoh – enthusiastic youngsters, eager-to-learn young couples, people groping yet willing to follow. The younger people, especially those connected with the Day School, will bring you great satisfaction and happiness. As for the others – I know that you will meet the challenges and give an excellent account of yourself.
