Dear Mrs. Weiss: Many, many thanks for the bottle of champagne which you sent to me. I am, of course, appreciative of the sentiments behind the gift, but I am even happier that you have determined to carry on the very noble and generous tradition set by your late husband, my very dear friend Arnold, of blessed memory. I know he would have wanted his way of life to be continued by you and by your beloved son. I know that this holiday can't be a very really happy one for you but I do hope that the joy and "nachas" you will derive of many, many years from your son and daughter-in-law and grandchildren will afford you many happy occasions to be able to continue Arnold's ways with the warmth and strength you will derive from his memory. Dear Yaakov: I was shocked and grieved to receive the news, which I just did from my sister, of the passing away of your beloved father ע"ה. While I met him once or twice, I did not have the privilege of knowing him well. I do know that I was always impressed by your loyalty and love as a son, and I appreciate how bereaved you and other members of the family must feel. Letter of Condolences to Dr. Gross (1973)

Dear Moishe: It is so difficult to say anything that is meaningful, that I feel it is almost best to say nothing at all. But פטור בלא כלום אי אפשר, hence this note. Mindy and I were dismayed by the dreadful news that Lennie brought to us. We are still in a state of shock. All I can say is that I feel for you very very deeply. All those who know you are broken hearted with you. Because my own words must of necessity be so faulty and inadequate, let me wish you consolation (though I am a bit late for official nechama) in our traditional way – המקום ינחם אתכם בתוך שאר אבלי ציון וירושלים. May the New Year bring you a full measure of nechama and may you begin to emerge from the darkness of the past year into new light and away out of your difficulties.
