Exchange with Dr. Lev with Offer to Assume Presidency of Jerusalem College of Technology (1972)

Dear Rabbi Lamm, I am writing to you on בע״פ since I think it is a דבר מצוה and hope to present a situation which cannot be classified otherwise a דבר האבוד. For about half a year I have come to the conclusion that the Jerusalem College of Technology needs a full-time president. It has now over 60 students and will grow rapidly in the next few years. Under these circumstances I personally have only two choices – either to give up my university position and take over the presidency of this school or find someone to head the school. In the latter case I would take a back seat or be a trouble shooter at most. I am turning to you with the hope that you may consider favorably the possibility of being the president of the school. I am sure that you are swamped with many offers here in Israel, some no doubt will be in position to offer considerable rewards.

לכ' השם הטוב ר' נורמן לאם יצו',I am asking Walter Wurzburger to act as a שליח מצוה and take this letter and enclosure to New York. At home I has heard rumours that דיברו בך נכבדות in corr. with the Bar-Ilan University and I fervently hoped that things would work out and that you'd come. I was very disappointed when I learned that there was little likelihood of your immediate coming to Bar-Ilan. You know that I am not orthodox (and in many areas – including the public, social & political re – even military antiorthodox) but I wish you and the like of you were in Israel. After all, even as "opponents" one wishes people whom we can respect, honour and love.
