Maimonides on the Love of God (1995)

Immediately after the profession of divine unity in the Shema, the Torah introduces us to one of the fundamental precepts of Judaism, namely, ahavat Hashem, the Love of God: (“thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and all thy soul and all thy might” – Deut. 6:4). It is self-understood that so powerful and central a theme in religion in general, and especially in Judaism, has engaged the attention and careful scrutiny of almost every Jewish thinker. Certainly, we expect the subject to be treated by Maimonides, and our expectations are not disappointed. No serious consideration of any aspect of Jewish thought or philosophy can or may avoid considering the views of Maimonides.Before proceeding to the more analytic interpretations of our key verse, all of which concern the nature of the Love of God, it is appropriate to mention a midrash that gives an entirely different "spin” to the commandment to "love the Lord thy God.” The Sifrei takes the verb ve’ahavru. "and thou shall love.” in the causative sense:another explanation of, “Thou shall love the Lord thy God” (Deut. 6:4): Cause Him to be beloved by humans, even as your father Abraham did. as it is written, "(And Abram took Sarai his wife, and his brother's son Lot and all the substance that they had gathered) and the souls that they had gotten in Haran" (Gen. 12:5)3In an old and well-known midrash, “the souls that they had gotten in Haran" is interpreted by the Sages as referring to the proselytes whom Abraham and"All the Torah is included in the commandment to lose God. because he who ioves the King devotes all his thoughts to doing that which is good and right in His eyes"—Sejer Mit:\ot Gado! Philo 18 (1971)

Add the following to discussion of Maimonides on Free Will and Determinism. Maimonides distinguishes between actional attributes, which may be positive, and essential attributes, which are all negative – such as: existence. Not only with regard to scriptural attributes, but even the four intellectually conceived attributes (life, power, knowledge, will) are actional. Hence, all of them must be accepted as homonyms, and their use is strictly equivocal. Therefore, when we speak of knowledge as applied to God and as applied to man, they are of different orders of meaning, and have nothing in common but the word itself.

רבי דוד ניטו (רד״נ) בא ללונדון ב1701 כחכם של הקהילה הספרדית. נולד בוויניציה ב1684. ת״ח, סיים גם את האוניברסיטה של פדוואה שם. זכה לתואר דוקטור לרפואה. שמש כדיין, רב, ורופא בליוורנו. התמחה בבעיות הלוח והאסטרונומיה. כתב ג״כ כמה שירים וכמה תשובות בהלכה. בלונדון, מצא קהילה יהודית מסוכנת, מתמוטטת מהתבוללות ונשואי-תערובת. ארבע סכנות: א. הכנסיה הנוצרית אליה השתמדו כמה יהודים ב. השבתאות. קודמו החכם התפטר כשנתגלה שהוא שבתאי. רד״נ כתב הבור ב 1715 נגד נחמיה חייא חיון. ג. הקראות, בעיקר בין האנוסים ששבו ליהדות. ספק אם היתה קראות מאורגנת, אבל ההפשטה התנגדות לתושבע"פ. על זה כתב כ"ש-מ״ד.ד. הדיאיזם, וגם הדים לדעותיו של שפינוזה. הדיאיזם הופיעה בנוסח נוצרי כשעובד ע״י הרציונאליזם של התקופה ההיא. נקטה בשיטת השכל כיסוד הבלעדי לוודאות בדת כבכל דבר, ובכן התנגשות בין שכל לדעות הדוגמטיות של הנצרות (בעיקר המיתולוגיות). בין היהודים קבלה צורת התנגדות לתושבע״פ.התפיסה הדיאיסטית בקשה למזג רעיון של הא-ל הבורא מרצונו עם המושג של עולם המונהג ע״י סבהיות מכנית טהורה. הם קבעו שיחס הבורא לעולם הוא כאומן שיצר מכשיר מושלם. בבריאה חד-פעמית, העניק האלקים אל העולם את כל האנרגיה הדרושה לו לעד. עולם זה פועל איפא לפי חוקיו מבלי שבוראו מתערב בו — ואע״פ שיש לא-ל היכולת לעשות את זה, ואולי מפעם לפעם עושה ככה, בקשו לצמצם עד אפם התערבות בלתי-הוקית זו. הסיקו שה"מבע" הנהו איפא מציאות מטפיסית נפרדת ועצמאית המתווכת בין הא-ל לעולם. אלקים ברא פעם — אבל איננו "מהדש בכל יום תמיד מעשה בראשית".שנתיים אחרי שהגיע ללונדון, הרצה הרד״ג בישיבה הספרדית הרצאה שהכתה גלים השובים בקהילתו: התקפה על הדיאיזם שהארנוה לעיל. טען שמה שהם קוראים "מבע" אינו אלא הא-ל הפועל ע״י השגההו הבלתי-פוסקה,ושבאמת המונחים מבע ואלקים זהים, ומה שהדיאיסטים בני-דורו מכתיבים ל"פבע" מוכתב ל"אלקים" בתורה והלמוד. מכיון שמאמינים אז היו רגישים לפינות של הפאנהיאיזם נוסה ספינוזה, נחשד הרד״ג בזה, וקמה נגדו התנגדות חריפה. בקונטרוס (ספרדי) על ההשגחה, ובאגרת התנצלות לרבי צבי אשכנזי (ה"חכם צבי"), בירר דד״נ את עמדתו. מקור המבוכה: ההבדל בין הרעיון סל האלקים כפועל הכל ומקור הכל ברצון ובחכמה (n^t\)<« ^A'tvvpsvii) ובין האלקים כזהה עם הכל, עם הטבע המתפתח, כשהוא כולו אימננטי בו ( …
