Invitation to Speak at Jewish Marriage Education Council Dinner (1975)

Dear Rabbi Dr. Lamm, On behalf of my Honorary Officers, I would like to invite you to London to be the guest of honour at our first Annual Dinner and to deliver our Annual Public Lecture. The Annual Public Lecture focuses its attention on a topical issue which affects the Jewish community at large. The Jewish Marriage Education Council was founded by the present Chief Rabbi Dr. I. Jakobovits to strengthen the Jewish home and Jewish marriage. To accomplish these aims, our organisation has a number of departments whose work is fully explained in our enclosed Annual Report and accompanying literature. We feel that a man of your standing in the American Jewish community would admirably enhance our goals by your presence at the function we are planning. The Chief Rabbi has informed me that should you be able to accept our invitation, he would be grateful if you would be available for other appearances in the Anglo-Jewish community. We would therefore contemplate inviting you to London for around 8 days. In order that your appearances in England would have its maximum impact, two dates are available – from 1st to the 8th February, 1976, or sometime between 1st March and 14th March, 1976. I would be very pleased if you would communicate to us your acceptance of this invitation at your earliest convenience. Thereafter I would be able to discuss the details and itinerary of your stay. Letter to Cantor Wietschner about Proctoring for Brooklyn College Final Exams (1975)

I am really very, very grateful to you for offering to proctor the exams that I am to give on Wednesday May 21st at Brooklyn College. First, I suggest that you try your best to get there a little early, as you may have some trouble finding a parking space. Come prepared with a whole bunch of coins! The first class, Judaic Studies 41c, begins at 4:25 P.M. and goes to 6:40 P.M. The class is held in the William James Building, which is on Bedford Avenue near Campus Road, Room 261s. Now, there will be one student of my other class who will be taking the exam during this exam period, Miss S— from Midwood H.S. She goes to that other Judaic Studies 75. Make sure that their chairs are spread out over the whole room so as to avoid even the slightest suspicion of copying. Tell them that they are to return their exam papers together with their notebooks. They should have nothing with them except pens, and a small dictionary if they want one – nothing else. They should take a great deal of care about handwriting, because if it is illegible I simply will not accept it. They have no option either of a blue book or sheets of paper. It makes no difference – they have no choice. I do not want them to take any marks on the exam papers, but only to place all their answers into their own notebooks. No abbreviations, please. Each question should be answered in brief but complete form: 15 minute, 20 minute, 10 minute, 5 minute notices before the exam is over. IV: here I want very brief answers. The numbers at the end of each question in this part indicate the number of answers for each answer. Numbers 1 through 4 require only a word or two answers. Numbers 5 through 7 require full paragraphs. Number 8 requires only a sentence or two. V requires a single essay which they can write at any length they wish as long as it contains all the information I seek.
